I managed to install the game just fine, but when I try to start it, nothing happens, apart from that it shows up in the task manager, with a memory usage of around 10MB. Killing the process just removes it, with no error message. Starting the game again, while there already is one in the task manager, just starts up another with the exact same symptoms.
I've also tried a clean boot, but no difference.
If it helps, my specs are:
Vista Ultimate (32bit)
HD4870 512MB
2GB DDR2 RAM
Athlon 64 X2 6000
EDIT:
Apparently it had nothing to do with the graphic drivers. I'm now using 8.11 with the exact same results.

This question / problem has been solved by Karlallenimage
it happend to me but in fact, it was because the game was unable to read the logo video. I suggest to remove it from the folder misc (logo.avi) to see if it could be that.
Thanks, but unfortunately it didn't work... I checked the change log and saw that on version 1.14 they fixed a bug that would cause the game to not even launch. Might be something there.
EDIT:
I managed to install the last official patch, but still nothing. I find this rather peculiar, since when I borrowed the retail version of this game from a friend, everything worked fine.

I managed to start the game in Ubuntu, using Wine, but the framerate there is horrible, but at least it shows that there is nothing wrong with the install.
EDIT:
I've tested it on my work laptop, with Vista Business, and it works fine there, so I'm guessing that there is some kind of application or something that's interfering with it. Guess I'll try a clean boot, and see if anything helps.

Zombus: I remember something about starting problems when the game was released. Back then, some PCs had a problem with initialising the startup video sequence and ended in a loop, thus interfering with the regular start.
Perhaps getting yourself a new video codec (IIRC, Indeo was used with Arx Fatalis) can do the trick?

Heh, can't even get to install the codec, the installation just freezes for some reason.
And wouldn't removing the intro video at least make it possible to start the game, despite not having the appropriate codec?
Anyways, I'm going to try a reformat within a few weeks. I have had the retail version running on my computer with no problems, so there is probably something peculiar that has happened.
Started having no start problem after changing video card from 8800GTS512 to 260 core 216 and installing WHQL 180.48 drivers. No start at all. 64 bit Vista Ultimate system , was running game with no issues at 1680 x 1050 res before videocard upgrade, so thinking it may be a driver problem as disabling start video as suggested does not help. Only other possibility that occurs might be recent windows update...may try rollback.

Well, I got it working. By reformatting and reinstalling. Not sure on what it could have been but at least it's working now.

I was having a lot of trouble with games crashing and that is exactly what I did a month or so ago. Probably just a build-up of crap on the system since the last format. At least that is what
is probably was for me :p

are you logged as admin on ur comp?
if not, try to play as administrator. im sure it will fix it
If you don't mind signing up for another set of forums, try the fan forums over at www.ttlg.com/forums. Arx is well-loved by quite a few there, such that it gets mention in the game readme, even in the GOG version.
You could try running in compatibility mode with XP? Setting the "core affinity" in the task manager (right click on the process) to just one of your two cores? Re-installing the game? Old games have trouble with dual core systems sometimes and newer video cards. Not likely to help, but worth a try. Sorry to hear about your problem, its an awesome game. Good luck.
It fixed it self after I reinstalled my computer, as I mentioned, no idea of what it was, but probably what Karlallen said, which is why I select his response as the solution.
Please please please share how you got it to work:(
I wanna buy the game as well, but I'm holding off until I can at least get the demo to t work:(
I'm having the same problem you were.
There must have been something else you did. Re-installing the same drivers and same version of DirectX would probably have the same result:(
EDIT: Installing Indeo didn't do anything. I think maybe the culprit is DirectX 9c. But the thing is very hard to remove, if at all.

Wouldnt start up when i first installed it. then I downloaded something called portable arx fatalis http://portableapps.com/node/30143. It ran once after that. Next time I started up computer, it went right back to the same problem. No idea what it did, all i did was extract it somewhere in c:/. Maybe one of you more tech savvy people can link together wtf happened. Cause I have no idea.

I haven't tried the portable version but that would only work when running it from ArxFatalisPortable.exe rather than the normal executable or its shortcuts.

Failing that you could try Arx Libertatis.
