Right, so, when I played this game ages ago, I think I tried playing as a human, no story, balanced stats, and Doctor/Gunfighter as the "Auto-spend-your-points" option, because I didn't know what to expect and I figured being able to fight at a distance while being able to heal myself, and not having to depend on party members, would be the way to go. I also remember not getting very far, because my save game got corrupted. At that point, I figured "Screw this", and started a new game of Black & White.
Anyway, I'm ready to start a new game, an I want to play a mostly solo Human, playing only with companions when the story or side quests demand it (If I could make up my own backstory, I'd write him as something like a Vietnam Veteran, sorta like John Rambo as he was in First Blood, not the subsequent movies. Perks would be points in skills and attributes relevant to self-reliance and combat, flaws would probably be points taken away from charisma, as nobody really trusts a drifter, and of course JR went into "Flashback Mode", which is a flaw in and of itself) . I also prefer tech over magic, but if magic characters play better by themselves, lemme know. I appreciate the appeal of rogue-ish characters, but ever since playing the very first Splinter Cell, I've lost all patience for hiding and waiting, so I'd only put points in Charisma for shopping and dialogue purposes. Oh, and for Poison Resistance, too, if it still counts for that in this game. I'm keen on treasure and secret area (and unique weapon/armour/tool) hunting. I plan on playing the "honourable path", and don't intend to lie too much, so I suppose I may have to hire or otherwise recruit a thief companion for lockpicking (I forget, can I take control of an NPC for pickpocketing? I'd rather not have to murder for keys and the like). I'm also a bit of a packrat, so I might need to either hire a half-orc or half-ogre as a packmule, unless there's some kind of "Gravitational Nullificatron" (or whatever it might be called in 19th century technospeak) to cancel out part of the weight of my pack.
Right, now that all of that's out of the way, I've another question. Is the ending of the game based partly on your techno-magical alignment, like Silverfall? Is part of getting the best ending being able to strike a balance between the two aspects?
(Sorry about the really long character prep. I just wanted to clarify everything to make sure I got the most accurate recommendation.)

I'll try to answer the best I can. If I don't, it means I have no clue/opinion.
1) If you're going solo-ish, either have a magic-affinity with the heal spells, and techy with the herb tech tree to make healing items.
2) Charisma + Persuade = more quest options, plus more quests. Plus, some dialog options only available to those of high enough INT (I think 10 is the ideal min for dialog options)
3) Personally, poison resistance isn't a big deal, the heal poison spell is low level, and I think the same for the schematic.
4) If you try to lockpick and an NPC has a better value, they'll try instead. Not so with pickpocketing, only you can do that. However, you can use fate points for a crit success if you absolutely have to.
5)If you got decent strength, weight isn't a factor but space is. However, a lot of chests/barrells don't renew thier contents, and they have infinite capacity. (Read to the end of this post for a light spoiler).
6) Ending is NOT based on tech/magic. You can save right before the end and try the different endings.
****LIGHT SPOILER BELOW*******
Liam's workshop outside of Blackroot has a "barrell/box" that's unlocked and doesn't respawn its items. Put all your extra stuff there. Plus, it's got a bed you can use for free, entering the area via the world map puts you really close to it, and you can access the world map from the workshop as well.
Also, the barrell outside of the doctors house in the 1st village (top right corner, there's 3/4 barrells, one one is openable) doesn't respawn items either.
I should also mention I plan to do the Ultimate Blessing bit, so my stats may end up over maximum anyway.
Er, you couldn't be specific, like, where to put points? How to setup a custom auto-scheme?

you shouldn't mix spell with tech.. choose one and specialize the hell in it...
spell damage is DIRECTLY proportional to your magic affinity... so a magic affinity of 100% means a harm spell does 20x the damage of a magic affinity of 5%.
I recommend mages, they rule. get harm as your sole attack spell, a variety of utility spells, and stone throw to destroy objects and to attack golems.

Either tech or magic, not both.
You're going solo, so.....DEX = being hit less (dodge) and DEX determines actions/RND in turn based mode.
If spellcaster, Willpower for spells, if techy, INT for schematics. If neither, then don't worry about them.
STR for melee damage.
CON if you notice your fatigue and HP are too low.
None into beauty.
If spellcaster, follow the post's above advice.
If melee-er, put points into melee.
If bow/firearms, put points into those perspective skills.
Again, since you're solo, you'll want maybe a few pts in pick locks - makes life easy.
Will you let yourself get Dog or no?
I don't see what the Ultimate Blessing has to do with tech OR magic, since all it involves is giving offerings to gods at certain points on the map in a certain order, and I think the manual says somewhere that Divine actions transcend tech and magic affinity/resistance anyway.
Since tech offers more possibility than magic in Arcanum, and since I'd rather associate with Dwarves than Elves, I'll probably be spending points in Technology. Plus, I get to use the Pyrotechnic Axe, Flamethrower, and I won't have to prepare to defend myself against a rogue Fire Elemental should I have decided to go that path and summon one.
It's a SPECIAL game, naturally I'll be getting Dog, and like I said, a STR based character to carry extra loot.
One thing I've never been able to plan very well is when to spend points where. For example, what do I spend on when I reach level 2, then 3? Is there a pattern or formula you guys can recommend?
