Built a thief character and made it to Shrouded Hills. Looks like there are some juicy chests to break into, and I was quite enthused at the prospect. Got my Apprentice rating in Lock Picking as well as 2 CPs invested in the skill. Dexterity is 13. I even found some lock picks that grant a 5% bonus to lock picking. However, every single attempt to pick locks has failed. What's the skinny here? Do I not have enough ranks in Lock Picking? Am I doing something wrong*? Anyone else have this problem with their thieves?

*(I open my inventory, then drag the lock picks over the 'use icon, which turns green, then click on the chest to use them. I assume that's the correct way to do it?)

You can put them in a quickslot, less of a hassle. Apart from that, I can't help you, never played a thiefly type...
Some chests and doors are just more difficult to open. Though two points in the skill for Shrouded Hills should be sufficient for most things. You can also keep trying until it opens (it isn't a one time shot thing, it is chance). Though sometimes if you keep doing it it will break the lockpicks (in my experience this takes a long time though).

Also, are you a magic using character? Lockpicking is a tech activity and so magic aptitude will disrupt the ability to use the skill well.
Thanks for the replies.

No, I've not invested in any magic skills at this point (character is level 6).
In my experience of Arcanum (and I've played it since it came out), lockpicking is one of the most annoying skills. Just when you think you should have enough points in the skill to open that lock that's stopping you, you discover it still isn't enough. Unfortunately, the mage spell doesn't work much better, and the noise made by failure can alert guards.

In Shrouded Hills, the barrel next to the bridge has always been virtually unpickable for me (I think I might have gotten it open once), and the bridge gates themselves cannot be picked at all. You must get the key to open them, or talk your way past the bandits there.

This is one game where it's a good idea to use your fists and bash open chests and other things. (As a matter of fact, this is one game in which your fists are actually your best weapon, but that's another story)

Eh, I've never had too much trouble with lockpicking, but I also usually only play a "pure" thief character if I take lockpicking as a skill, so I invest plenty of points into it.

The barrel by the bridge requires three or four points, and probably having expert training is a good idea as well. I mean, once you have your five points in lockpicking and it trained to master (which takes a long time to actually get to the guy who will train you, unfortunately) picking locks becomes pretty easy.
Ah, but you're really confirming my point, SheBear. Most characters won't have 4 points in lockpick when they get to Shrouded Hills, and IIRC, expert training for lockpick is not available before you reach Tarant. By the time your char is actually good enough to do the Master quest -- well, you don't need to pick locks anymore.:)

Well I think that barrel by the bridge just isn't expected to be opened before you get out of Shrouded Hills (not that there is anything good in it anyway). You don't need to "clean" an area before you leave it, so not being able to unlock everything in an area doesn't mean you can't go back and finish the job later.
Wish I could give more than one post solution points, but Malthaussen seemed to have hit on the explanation first, so I'm giving the points to him. But thanks everyone for the help.
