Oh god, that.
I assume you've tried a lot of options.
Edit: I ask because, well, frequently (as in my case) one of them will work.

Everything I can think of bar one option; killing him with a piece of equipment that drains health and dragging his corpse away manually before reviving him. Not tried it as I have no such equipment, I think I sold my Baneful Gauntlets long ago.

But I have tried an awful lot. Even overuncumbered him and drained his stamina so he fell over as soon as he left but damn, he does love those trees.

"I'm sorry! But this is something I should have done a long time ago!"
*runs off and humps a tree*
"Aaaaah! Oh larch, my love!"

"There is no immortality but a tree's love!"
"Oh god, I'm engaged to a douglas fir."
"She can't have you, the hussy! We shall perish togethah!"

you don't have previous save?
and in walkthrough there was solution to prevent him from leaving by engaging dark elves so when you go down they will attack you preventing virgil from engaging his tree hump (that might have been written before unofficial patch)

what about scroll of exiting, teleportation, or killing him and then resurrecting him next to the trees?

or leave a character in place where he gets stuck so he has to run in different direction?

you said you tried everything so you probably tried those methods :P
I think I have a save from several hours before which I could use but I don't know if it work; my other previous save was just outside T'Sen Ang, which is what I've been using to try and rectify the situation.

Tried starting combat; he either runs back to the trees after the battle is over, or I get him far enough away that the event doesn't trigger at all.

Scrolls and whatnot don't seem to work, probably because he technically isn't in the party anymore. Only way I can kill him is by attacking him (no cursed equipment) and when I bring him back he's generally not too happy about it and in a fighting mood.

Tried blocking his path repeatedly, he just either runs around them or stops a little further away from the trees.

you can use fate points to trigger a happy mood. i guess you can just tell him to wait before the village and get him after. you skip final part of his quest but you will be able to use him for the rest of the game.
You know, I can't remember if I actually tried using fate points or not... Tried it again anyway. Unfortunately he just attacks me when he gets up anyway. Guess I'll just have to avoid the quest, much as it hurts me to do so.
I am compelled to ask this stupid question. Have you tried scrolling hard in the opposite direction the moment he starts running, in hopes that he'd disappear when he went off-screen? Maybe even running that way, while you're at it, to mildly increase the distance you can scroll.

I have, unfortunately. Also tried doing so after uninstalling the high-res patch to increase the scroll distance, no luck.
Darn.
You'll get through that quest some time, I'm sure, on some other save.

No doubt. I'm not too surprised to be honest, I always seem to encounter the weirder glitches in games.
I'm really bugged by that part in the Tarant Sewers (Closed/Restricted) where the six bandits are hiding out. There are three empty chests there, and there's a barrel with three pieces of Pure Ore. That just cries out "Puzzle!". I put one piece in each chest, and advanced the time One Day (I had to leave the Sewer first, since it wouldn't let me wait there, so add "Long Walk" to the list of grievances), and nothing happens. I want to know if it's a broken mini-quest or something.

I will bet you dollars to donuts those three chests are intended to have contents and that the bandits are supposed to be relevant to something, but that the rushed production schedule that led to so many empty houses and errors in this game meant they just left the bandits and empty chests there unfinished.
Well I finally completed the game. Enjoyed the ride but I have to say, the ending was a little disappointing. Maybe something went wrong, but there were very few things shown; just how Black Root, Shrouded Hills, Loghaire and Vendigroth ended up.

There are some other things that get shown if you get involved in side quests. Shrouded Hills, Loghaire and Vendigroth are all parts of the main quest endings that you get if you just play main quest stuff. Black Root gets decided by side quest activity. As does...

SPOILERS

Tarant (various parts depending on what you do), Dernholm, and Caladon (I think).

There may be some other small things that I'm forgetting about.
