Hey all - this is my first post on the forums so hi :)

A friend of mine talks about this game a lot, so I decided to check it out. I'm really struggling to get into it and I could do with a little bit of help.

1st question:
It's staggering the number of character creation options! I've read some online guides and tried playing as a half-orc melee character but most people seem to hate me. Is there any recommended option for a new player? An option that ideally involves fun combat and good skill distribution. I'm not overly fussed about mage/melee, I'll go with whichever is preffered by the board.

2nd question:
The combat seems a bit flimsy in real-time. What's the recommended combat mode, turn-based or real time?

3rd question:
If a "follower" dies (e.g. Virgil) how do I bring them back to life?

4th question:
Depending on your answer to question 1, what's the best starting "gear" to purchase?

Final question:
Are there any quirky mechanics I should be aware of? I have had a scan-read of the manual but found the referencing images to be too low in quality.

You're probably wondering "Why not ask your friend?" Well other than declaring how awesome this game is, he's actually fairly useless.

Thanks, and apologies for poor spelling/grammar. Typed on my blackberry!

Hi, nice to see a new Arcanum player.

You mentioned you looked at the manual briefly, but I would advise taking the time to read it as it really helps explain all the mechanics of the game.

Yes, there are a huge number of character possibilities... one of the great things about Arcanum is playing it many times with different characters and seeing how the game reacts differently based on how you play and what you do.

For a first-time player, I'd recommend a mage or a straight fighter. They're fairly easy to play, whereas tech characters tend to be a bit harder (but still very fun). Unfortunately, the best fighters are half-orcs or half-ogres, both of whom are rather poorly-liked by most people. You can try a dwarven or human fighter so people won't treat you so badly. Also, when you are in town, if you wear either the smoking jacket or elegant dress (I think it's called an elegant dress) people will react to you better. For a fighter character you will want dexterity, strength, melee skill and dodge skill mainly. You can also take a few spells or technologies if you want but you will mostly just hit things. I found a pure melee character got a little boring after a while, but the game's plot is really interesting so you'll probably still want to continue.

I have not played a mage yet personally, but I hear they are some of the easiest to play, especially if you take the spell Harm. Elves make good mages and they also get a bonus to beauty so people will likely react to you better also. For a mage you will want Willpower to unlock more powerful spells, and intelligence if you want to sustain many spells at once. Also remember that your spells use up your stamina, and if you run out you'll fall unconscious and probably get killed.

I prefer turn-based for everything. I have heard some people say that real-time can be good for distance fighters like gunmen, but I haven't played a gunman myself. Melee and magic are probably best in turn-based mode. I find real-time is too fast for me to react.

I believe that when someone dies, they're dead, so you have to re-load an old save.

This is more important for characters like thieves or ranged fighters... for example, if you were making a grenadier character, you'd want to grab a boomerang so you could have a backup throwing weapon to go with your thrown grenades. For a fighter, any decent-looking weapon and armor is fine. For a mage, I'm not sure actually. But it's probably not that important.

One thing that trips up a lot of new players is not knowing about fast-travel. When you finish the starting area of the game, you will be able to enter the world map and fast-travel to the first town. This is MUCH safer than just trying to walk there. You bring up the map with the "W" key, but it only works when the map button in the top left corner has turned into a blue globe.

Sometimes item stats are confusing. There's a page in the manual that lists all the abbreviations used, like FD = "Fire damage", etc. Worth looking up. It's also been posted elsewhere in these forums.

You will find after not too long that your weapons and armor can get damaged frequently. They can be repaired, but often this lowers the item's maximum health each time. In Tarant there are some good smiths who can repair your stuff without lowering the max health. If you find that hitting things with your weapon is damaging your weapon, you can just switch to fists instead.

To your 2nd question: As Waltorious said, combat is better in turn based, especially for mages (who aren't just spamming harm) and fighters. For a ranged character you can be "faster" in real time, so you can kite enemies easier, but I never have had enough of a problem with the game's difficulty to actually need to do this. So I would suggest turn based.

To your 3rd question: Again, as Waltorious said, once someone dies they are dead. UNLESS you have a companion who can cast resurrect (there aren't many who can do this, it might only be one actually...), or you have a resurrect scroll (make sure you aren't too technologically inclined or it won't work), or can cast resurrect yourself, or you can use the technological equivalent of resurrect... I forget what it is called, though I remember exactly what the item looks like (this is what happens when you play Arcanum as much as I used to). Basically though people stay dead, and since you're probably pretty early in the game at this point your options are rather limited.

Generally, as Waltorious said a mage is the easiest to play once you get the hang of magic. A fighter is also easy, but sometimes boring. And a technologist is much more difficult, but equally fun. And then from those basic ideas of: Magic, Neutral, Tech, you can go anywhere. One of my favorite parts of Arcanum is coming up with the way a new character is going to play, because there are so many options.

Also, make sure (before you start over again) to follow the advice from this thread:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/what_patches_should_i_install_on_a_fresh_gog_install
Installing those patches will make the game less buggy, and look better on modern computers.

Have fun!

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to suggest the Unofficial Patch. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the responses :)

I will have a proper read through the manual now and will look at choosing the "Elven Mage" option :) I'll download the patch after I've done some work and change the combat to turn based.

Will report back on how it went!

You can change the combat to turn-based in the options but you can also do it "on the fly". I think Spacebar toggles it. This can be useful sometimes when there are a lot of enemies in turn-based and it will hang as it tries to figure out who's turn is next. Quickly switching to real-time and back will reset things and the battle will continue.
