Why?
Because of auto-updates. There are still patches in the making and I want to recive them automatically.

why would GOG provide a steam key?? thats like microsoft giving you an apple OSX CD key would never happen...

patches come though the gog downloader...

For almost every single game on Gamersgate (an arc enemy of Steam) you get a Steam key with your purchase.
Does that make sense? YES. That is called "costumer care". Fulfilling the needs and wishes of costumers like me. That is correct, I am a rly cheap... ...buyer.

GOG has nothing to do with Steam. I daresay this is for the better.

As for automatic updates: it is a feature yet to come to GOG, but it is definitely on its way. Until then you can vote for it on the community wishlist to give it higher priority.

Before that, they need to sort out agreement, negotiate between different party. Beside, GOG still new in bringing new game and Steam key is one of unpopular request here. Because that defeat one of the philosophy here; DRM free. They can try to fulfill wishes of their customer, provided enough demand.

Beyond the moral judgements some people are putting here, I find this question to be quite interesting. Alan Wake ships as a SteamWorks title for retail, which implies particular features for updates, achievements, steamcloud, etc. It's fair to know what features are not present in the GoG version and what are the main differences (besides, evidently, the lack of DRM!)
As for the key thing, there seems to be none included with the purchase of the game (nothing in the email nor in the list of downloadable content in my game list)—so, as far as I can tell, you don't get a key, but I haven't downloaded the game yet.

Generally, Steam keys are provided in one of two ways:

The developer/publisher generates their own serials, and register those with Valve. This is what Arcen games generally does. This provides "costumer" support in that it gives the devs excuses to wear lots of fancy costumes.
The developer/publisher and/or the distributor purchase keys from Valve (likely at a very sizable discount), and sell those. This is likely what Gamersgate and the like do. This benefits the distributor in that they get business (I generally buy all my Steam games from Gamersgate outside of a Steam sale because I have a discount at GG), and it benefits Valve in that people use Steam.

I doubt either of those two cases are true for Alan Wake, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Also as far as I know GOG is not giving a steam keys with their products. Its their policy or something.

Still, for that price, Alan Wake is a steal! I highly reccomend to get it from GOG! :D

Also in GamersGate you are getting steam keys only for games that require Steam to work (becouse in those games Steam is a form of DRM) so its not like with every game you are getting Steam Key. In here Alan Wake is DRM -free so no Steam required.

GOG is not like GamersGate or GMG or any other store. They just selling games.

GOG works with devs to bring DRM-Free games with goodies here.

No, it's called "Steam DRM". You get a Steam key on Gamersgate/GMG/Impulse and other digital distribution channels only if a game uses Steamworks as an anti-piracy measure (which means you have to register your copy).

/that. Great game without a key. You can probably add to your Steam library anyway (though not sure).
