New release: The Complete Ultima 7

Today you will see a strange message on your computer screen from a mysterious being called the Guardian!

Visit Britannia once more to prove that you are a true champion of the Virtues. GOG.com and EA bring you the Complete Ultima 7 to you for only $5.99!

You are the Avatar, summoned once again to Britannia, the fabled land of the monarch Lord British. When you arrive through the Moongate, you meet with your old friend Iolo. An obscene murder has just shook the town of Trinsic. You learn that a new organization, called the Fellowship, has been growing in numbers. As you investigate the mysterious murder and begin uncovering true motivations of the Fellowship, you’re also haunted by ominous warnings of the enigmatic Guardian.
Ultima 7: The Complete Edition features a complete graphical and control overhaul of the Ultima engine. The oldschool top-down Ultima view has been revamped: now the game fills the whole screen and finally you can control the whole game with a mouse. The vast populated world of NPCs with their own life schedules makes exploring the enormous area of Sosaria an engaging and epic adventure. Ultima 7 is distinguished by the total immersion and freedom in exploring and completing the game. You can pick up everything and interact with every nook and cranny out there. To eat, which is needed for survival, you need to get flour and water, mix them on a table in a bakery, than use the the newly created dough on a fireplace to bake bread. If you’re good at it, the baker might just tip you for your effort!
The tactical combat system of earlier Ultima series games has been replaced with a real-time combat system, where the AI is controlling your team and you, the player are only in control of the Avatar. You advance in experience via Ultima’s familiar level up system where once you have earned a sufficient amount of experience points you automatically gain a level.

Ultima 7: The Complete Edition consists of Ultima 7: The Black Gate, Ultima 7: The Forge of Virtue, Ultima 7: Part Two - Serpent Isle, Ultima 7: Part Two - The Silver Seed all in one package for as low as $5.99!

Scout the courtyard in Castle Britannia, and double click on the plaque/sign on the top of the doorway at the northern end when Lord British is walking underneath it. The otherwise invulnerable monarch will die, and a note on his corpse will reveal his sordid affair with a castle maid.

Then reload your last saved game.

Good memories... but also painful memories as I remember having a hard time knowing what to do in the game. I even failed with a walkthrough (something to do in some woods but did not find where and what, even using the walkthrough).

Huge backlog for now but I might buy it later.

Ric1987: Should I play the other six games first or just get this? Hmmmmmmmmmm..........
Nope! It is nice to know the backstory of the companions you meet in games but other than that U7 is completely standalone.

Nearly 40 years old now, and i can still remember the day i bought that Black Box...and even after all these years i remember most of the excitement i felt when playing this game.

Cheers to the makers of this site and their efforts to bring us all the Gold Old Games of our youth :)

Tallima: 1) Can you click just with left clicking in this game? Or do you need both mouse buttons?
I'd rather have both mouse buttons to play this. As pointed out before, it's not strictly necessary, but I'd rather.

elisstar: Also, this game has a few serious bugs, documented here: http://codex.ultimaaiera.com/wiki/Bugs#Ultima_VII
Hopefully this is the CD version which corrected some of the game breaking bugs.

PhilD: Has anyone confirmed yet whether or not this is the CD version?
Ultima had bugs like any game. It's a truly huge and old game, you'll find bugs here and there. It definitely retains quality though.

And yes, this is apparently the CD version, as it sports full speech and the expansion. Ah, I confirmed it's DOSBox and not Exult too.

Mosse85: I have Vista myself. And I understand that all GOG games run without this kind of bullshit. Well lets see what happens. Thanks to all for your help.
On your programs group Start > All programs > GOG.com > Ultima VII - Complete > Ultima VII - Black Gate and Ultima VII - Serpent Isle there'sa program called "Graphic mode setup".

Here in my Windows Vista, Ultima VII Black Gate crashed straight away. Then I entered Graphic mode setup and picked graphic mode "Overlay". It worked. Other options might be faster here and there.

A smart man would just track down and edit dosbox.conf, which has many great options to speed up an already great game.

SOld! As soon as Friday gets here and all the GoG's options for the week are on the table. One order for everything I want at the end of the week trumps 2-3 clicks during the week :)

ZapMcRaygunn: May be looking for a new apartment soon as my jumping for joy and screaming bothered the neighbors at 4:00AM when this Classic of EA Classics popped up here. The Complete Ultima VII---I wondered how it would go down...Would they release BG and SI as separate games? Would they have the add-ons, or would the impossible turn possible and the whole set be released together?

I had a rough night sleeping due to situations at home, but I did have one dream. I dreamt I went onto GOG to look for the next EA classic and found some obscure title with CGA graphics. (That should have been my clue right there. GOG wouldn't release something like that in real life.) I was sorely disappointed in the dream. Then I woke up in the middle of the night and checked the hints on the Facebook page. They mentioned a series that ran for almost 20 years.

That means....ULTIMA!!!!! (1980-1999) Could it be? Was this the real dream kicking in? I tried to sleep again, but found myself awake at 4:00 AM so I checked GOG and found the Great Earth Serpent staring me in the eyes. The Complete Ultima VII for $5.99? This must be the dream, right?

Nope. This time, in a reversal of the usual way of things, real life was more like a dream and the dream was more like real life for a change. What will be the next EA Classic? It will be something good for sure, but The Big Kahuna has arrived. Thank you GOG, thank you.

If anyone is reading this and hasn't lived the Ultima VII experience, do it. It is well worth your time. You will laugh, you will cry, you will die (but be resurrected when you do) and live the life of the Avatar. I-III was the beginning. IV-VI was the Age Of The Avatar when you played through the game and led the Avatar through his (or her) quests. Now you can BE the Avatar and live in his (or her) world.

Sorry to be so personal here, but this game really means that much to me. Yes I have been playing the new Elder Scrolls fantasy simulator Skyrim, but that will have to wait for a while as Britannia (and a place called The Serpent Isle) await once again.

andrewmclaughlin: Wow. just... wow. I could not possibly agree more. These are the kind of posts that keeps me comming back to the forums. I love to to see what people are saying about these games. They must Never be Forgotten or over looked. And by Gog re-releasing this game, it may open some eyes out there in this commuinity who are just not aware of this Masterpice.

The People in Ultima 7 are Alive. They get up, go to work, eat and drink, and go to bed at night. They just dont hang around waiting for the player come trigger a sily quest.

This Game Goes Far Beond a 10/10 Rating. This could easily be the best RPG Ever made. I need this game in my library in order to sleep at night. Another Great Post Zap. Have Fun
Thank you, Andrew, I really enjoyed writing this, as I was, and still am very excited.
To me, playing Ultima VII for the first time was like seeing Star Wars for the first time, or reading Lord Of The Rings for the first time. Star Wars came out many years ago, and other films from the time period are often labeled "old" or "out of date" even though they were very popular at the time.

Many games were released in the 1990s, and many were good, but many would not be played now as technology has moved on. Ultima VII, however, is like Star Wars in that it was so groundbreaking that it is still the best thing out there, and still great to enjoy, much as Star Wars still sells and is still enjoyed by millions.

Ultima is THE masterpiece of computer gaming; it is like a great classic painting that will always be enjoyed, even as time goes on. Look at the ratings and popularity of this title at this release. GOG has injected new life into this classic and has done a great deed for the world of computer gaming. GOG, thou art virtuous.

Is this compatible with Exult if I'd rather use that than DosBox? (The keyring mod being one of the main reasons I'd prefer to use that. I still have nightmares about multiple bags full of keys)...

I thought you had to have a 3d accelerator (voodoo 2) to run this game

doesnt really strike me as a 3d game.. there is a voodoo memory manager though (attached with ultima 7) maybe you mean that.

Thanks GoG for fixing the speed issue with Blackgate and making and old game playable again... i never could get Dos Box to slow the CPU enough but you somehow managed it :)

The memories this game brings back and is the candle i hold against every RPG made since.

Please finish off doing the series even tho the last two games were not as good as the 7th, i'd still love to have working versions in my collection...Pagan was good but diffirent and the last game Ultima 9, yes it was buggy at the time but its graphics were advanced and still packed a rather large game world.

U9 needed an accelerator, I think it was one of the first games to require one. U7 was pure 2D VGA. Its roadblocks were memory and disk space.

I'm having a problem with Serpent Isle quitting after the intro movie and The Black Gate not working at all.

Does anyone have fixes?

Try the Ultima subforum, you're more likely to get help over there. :)
