Release: Soulbringer

You must succeed where the greatest of heroes has failed.

It’s been a while since there has been a new RPG on GOG.com shelves, but today we offer Soulbringer on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Let’s conduct a little thought excercise here: If you were an average person living in the mystical world of Rathenna and your father was killed and your uncle Adrus turned out to know a lot about magic, ancient warriors, and demons, would you rather:

a) ignore your crazy uncle, live on a farm, raise a family, and live a long and boring life or,
b) learn magic, learn sword-wielding, awaken your powers inherited from your past lives, and slay ancient demons, preserving the world for all?

Those of you who decided that option “a” sounds a little too dull have a chance to jump into the fantasy world of Soulbringer, an action RPG in the spirit of other classic hack and slash games of the era.

Soulbringer is one of those “hidden gems” that we love to bring up to the surface here on GOG. It was buried in an avalanche of other fantastic cRPGs released in the year 2000 (Diablo II, Icewind Dale, and Baldur’s Gate II all came out that year!), but if it had been released in a different year, it would likely also be one of the classic RPGs we all know and love. The things that make a well-crafted piece of action fantasy gaming, like a unique combat system, well-constructed magic, a long and involving storyline, and the indefinable ‘joy factor’ are all here and make Soulbringer the perfect addition to your fantasy/RPG shelf.

Soulbringer is the kind of RPG that offers a lot of action and fun and is definitely worth buying on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Expack: From what I've read, you can either use BUTTON SPAM DIE MONSTER!!! (e.g. using spells and different kinds of weapon attacks using different mouse buttons and/or hot-keys), or you can create special macro-attacks, which allow you to string two or more attacks and/or spells together, and bind them to a key or mouse button. Thus, in exchange for a bit of forethought and trial-and-error, you can potentially save yourself a lot of keystrokes during battle!

Of course, given as I have no practical experience with Soulbringer whatsoever, I can't vouch for the validity of the above information. Therefore, please take what I say with a grain of salt, so to speak.

actually you're totally correct - there are various weapons and spells with different effects on enemies, and you can all mix these into combos (or just choose different strikes as you like)

example: bandit - they're made of flesh (obviously) so a slash with a sword or a fire spell can do the trick. so for your combo you use "one stab", "one low slash" (go for his kneecaps! :), "two stabs" and "one fireball"... that should do the trick...

another example: skeleton - I've found out that pickaxe is extremely efficient on these, and as the pickaxe has only one possible attack, "swing above your head", you enter four or five of these into your combo and you're fine :)

(from what I recall the combo ends automatically when the opponent dies so you don't have to worry about too much items in your combo)

yeah, digging into my memories, this game has a unique fantastic absorbing atmosphere.
and not to mention about the true epic quest!......

Four or five listings of the same action is redundant.. just put one action and press the 'loop' button to the right of it.

I nver finished it "back then", but iirc it is really, really long. At least 40 - 60 hours. I played it for weeks and never got the feeling I got near the end.

The game as it stand is broken for a LOT of the people who have bought it, but GOG are aware of the problems are looking in to it, there just isn't a solution at this point in time.... for that reason, for the time being I'd say hold off on buy it til the problems with it are fixed.

It seems to be a VERY good game.. but it's pretty much unplayable atm.

Well, let's just hope this won't turn out to be like Gorky 17. I mean, I have no problem playing and finishing the game, but lots of people seem to have problems with it, and while GOG is aware of the problem so far they do not fix it.

never completed. i was playing it years ago with no problem. im going to try it again in a couple of months.

Yeah.. Well in general the point I'm trying to make is for the GOG version, to enable people to make a purchase decision based on the quality and state as is, I would certainly hope that it would have run properly when it was first released.

In this fixed state (timeslip, u the MAN!) and if you're willing to ignore a few chinks and a slow start, the game is engrossing,truly epic and fun ! everytime i think i've run in to a main baddy it's just another awesome sub baddy (but all with story) it's just great and so freaking long ! i reccomend a walkthrough though, it's hardcore RPG in every sense !
