New release: Icewind Dale 2 Complete

With only one more Atari-Hasbro title left, Icewind Dale 2 Complete brings us perilously close to completing our awe-inspiring offering of epic, level 20, masterwork role-playing games.

Icewind Dale 2 is a computer role-playing game and the last title created with the Infinity Engine. The setting of choice is, of course, Faerûn of the Forgotten Realms, home to legendary tales and heroes beyond count. The mechanics come from the Third Edition Dungeons and Dragons ruleset, meticulously adapted to work in a real-time game. The story is just enthralling, good enough to compete with any fantasy novel. The dialogue is rich and enjoyable. The characters memorable. The combat satisfying and expertly paced. The game... An absolute masterpiece. If you don't have it yet - get it now. And if you've already got one... What's the harm in getting yourself a backup?

Damuna: I love these releases too but I don't think they've been altered to make them Win 7-friendly. I still get the same glitches with Win 7 64 as I get with the disc releases.
To be honest, I don't think the games have been touched at all. The only differences between the GOG releases of the IE games and retail that I can see are:

The installer, obviously
No DRM so no CD crack needed
Some of the games have a few INI tweaks already applied (like increasing the number of AI navigation nodes in Torment)

Everything else is identical, right down to the transparency issues on certain video cards which is especially problematic with Planescape: Torment.

On the plus side, this meant that all of those awesome IE mods worked right off the bat.

edit: Oh, those Win 7 glitches that I mentioned also happen in XP 32. It's more a video card driver thing than operating system.

What glitches are you experiencing? I'm playing them on Win7 64 bit and haven't noticed anything untoward.

For most of the games, I get minor transparency issues with the fog of war. ..You know, the areas that haven't been uncovered. Instead of the fade-to-black on the edges of the uncovered areas, the fog is a sudden switchover to total black. Ugly, but not gamebreaking.

Torment, on the other hand, has lots of DirectDraw transparency issues, most of which take a while to become apparent (the more elaborate spells will actually crash the game).

This is a common issue with certain Nvidia cards and I've found workarounds for all of the problems. But I can assure you that I have the exact same problems with GOG's release as well as the discs. Not only that, the same problem appears even when I dual-boot to XP 32.

I haven't noticed any of those issues. As noted, I'm playing on Win7 Pro 64 bit and my graphics card is an nvidia GTX275. I don't know what this indicates though. Not sure it's evidence for or against the games being optimized for Win7.

I think there are options in all Infinity Engine games to fiddle with transparency settings; Have you tried that?

That's true. But I don't think the retail releases ever had problems with Win 7 in the first place. My point was only that I can't find any indication that the games were altered for GOG's release.

I get a little carried away when I start talking about those crazy glitches since I've been dealing with them for sooooo longgggggg. FYI, I've had the exact same issue with my previous 8800 GTX and my current 9800 GTX (warranty replacement).

Yes. I've found workarounds for all of the games, although Torment is still kind of a mess.

It's actually more of an NVIDIA driver problem rather than a GOG problem. I have both ATI and NVIDIA cards and I can confirm that running Infinity Engine based game using an NVIDIA card is a royal pain in the ass. It's a well discussed and documented problem.

Why GOG why?

$9.99 for an item that Amazon has for $8.82 - free shipping and a box and manual !

It makes no sense to have ten dollar games !!

People are still willing to buy the game for $9.99, that's why. I guess $9.99 with bonus soundtrack and free from DRM/CD-changing makes sense to them.

It still makes sense to me - yeah, admittedly for $8.82 you get a box and a printed manual, but for $9.99 at GOG you get a DRM-free version of the game under a rather liberal license that allows you to make backups when and if necessary, you are freed from the necessity to swap the CDs or use a no-CD crack to avoid the CD/DVD wear-and-tear, and you know that the game is yours to keep, you can download it from here as many times as you want, you can back it up on a DVD yourself, etc. Plus, it's fully patched and has all expansions already. Plus, you get the manual in electronic form, plus a bunch of extras such as the soundtrack and whatnot - not much maybe to some people, but still better than just the bare game with no extras. ;) So yeah, personally I don't mind buying for $10 from GOG rather than for $8-$9 from Amazon, for me the perks of a DRM-free digital release outweigh the $1 advantage for a physical copy, even with a printed manual and a nice box. :) Of course, it's a matter of opinion though.

Also, let us not forget that even if you discount the extras, lack of DRM on certain games, no need for CDs, and so forth... If a game does happen to cost a spec more, and those are still not good enough reasons, consider the extra dollar as going towards bringing other old classics here for you to play; classics that may not cost a dollar more, but save you dozens of dollars considering what certain rare titles cost on eBay or Amazon.

For anyone still unable to get a copy for whatever reason...

Give me a GPGF!
O and a G and a E3 (not the Games Convention)!
BRWP comes next.
Don't get MOPey just because you're a J!

You know what to do to get the code.

Neat, thanks. Didn't take it, but just wanted to say thanks anyway.
Edit: Surprised it's still there after more than TEN minutes and counting! Maybe I should just claim it. I'll give it another minute... must... refrain... myself...

I missed that, I thought they already had BG2... well, that certainly means there is more than just 1 missing atari title then... at least two. NWN2 and BG2 (and that is assuming you roll up all the expansions for these into a single game)

I don't think we'll be seeing NWN2 around here anytime soon. It hasn't even been released on Steam after having been announced years ago, it runs perfectly on newer systems, and $10 for it+expansions is simply way too cheap yet.

i agree with said assessment, but that doesn't mean it isn't an atari title that has yet to be released on GOG
