New release: Gothic 3

We’re completing the Gothic trilogy on GOG.com. Gothic 3 - the latest part of adventures is available now for only $9.99!

You are the Nameless Hero, the one who defeated the Avatar of the Sleeper god. The same hero who dealt with his four minions. Now it’s time to explore the kingdom of Myrtana. The Orcs have won the war and now humans are mere orc slaves. A conflict is waging between three distinct factions: the triumphant Orcs, the rebels loyal to the King Rhobar, and the hashishin - a guild of assassins with an unknown goal or origin. Your ultimate goal will require you to ally with one of the factions and help them achieve their objectives.

Character Progression is similar to the earlier installments of Gothic. Level up with experience, and quest completion, learn new skills and talents with points you get for every level up. The combat system was revisited, now it boasts more combo moves, optional full mouse controls, and your hero is able to use shields to improve his blocking abilities. Further, Rune-Magic has disappeared from the land, leaving only the magic of the ancients intact but scattered across Myrtana in form of ancient scrolls. Finding these scrolls is key to learning and using powerful magic to defeat your foes.

The most visible change from Gothic 2 is the new graphics engine, which looks stunning even now. The rich, vivid world of Myrtana is open for you to explore, but be aware of the dangerous beasts and monsters lurking deep inside the wilderness. You are free to go wherever you want, and lots of side-quests are available to lengthen your playthrough. Experience a great open-world RPG where your decisions can alter the course of a whole continent.

Check out the whole Gothic franchise on GOG and grab the newest installment for only $9.99.

BloodMist: Hahahaha, ahhhhhh...Gothic 3 is such a a half-assed Elder Scrolls wannabe.
Why would anyone want to copy the series that's basically a 3D mod for Ultima 7?

Try harder.

This is a truly awesome game. The world is huge, you can explore, fight, hunt, collect, overthrow, cast, assassinate, climb, conspire... It's definitely one of the best roleplaying experiences I ever had. Perhaps the best in more modern games (after Baldur's Gate, only Deus Ex had the effect Gothic has in me).

Despite the bugs from the original version, the thing I didn't like about Gothic 3 was the simplistic mouse-mashing combat system that replaced the old system, in which you actually had to focus on defending and attacking correctly to survive the orcs. That was HARD and very rewarding.

I never played the expansion, but not putting it here is just plain silly. Knowing that you won't be able to have that option degrades the game value greatly.

Hm. I generally get hate from people who don't want to admit they suck at the difficult combat system from Gothic 1 and 2, but Gothic 3 has none of that, it's in fact just too easy, so where are you coming from? Do you even like Elder Scrolls anyway?

MichaelPalin: Version 1.74!? Heh!, I played the version 1.13. I remember some problems here and there, a lot of crashes (due to memory usage of >1.4 GB!) and a mission I had to reload because the NPC "forgot" about it. I may pick this up just to see how different it feels with the community patch. A good reason for openess in video games is that the community can help a lot with problematic games.

Kunovski: I had to wait many, many years to have a PC capable of playing this game on full (not ultra though :) details - yes, I've started this year :D

so I've never touched this game without having it updated with 1.74... and I must say this game is so unbelievably awesome, that it stands firmly next to her younger sisters I and II. and of course, no crashing, all quests functional, all the honey in it ready for you to lick...

forget about Skyrim, forget about Arcania, don't forget about Witcher 2, just go ahead and buy G3!
I do consider Gothic 3 to be a great game, very expansive, with a lot of stuff to do and quite an alive world. However, even well patched, I can see why people like I & II better. In fact, I do. Returning characters barely do anything and the NPCs feel a bit more static than in previous games, don't know exactly why. Besides, the last part of the game, in the snowy land, is really frustrating and is very disconnected from the rest, it really breaks the pacing. And the ending was a giant kick in the balls.

My hope was that they would keep the scale for their next game (which I didn't want to be another Gothic, I get sick really fast of franchising) and solve the problems they had with III. It was eventually Risen, much smaller, but much Gothic-er too. We really need more games like the Elder Scrolls games, I hope PB eventually get the fundings or whatever they need to make Gothic-y game with a huge scale.

Well, Gothic 2 and 3 are on sale, 50% off.
Gothic 1 still regular price.
That figures it.
132
Is Gothic 3 on sale on purpose or by accident? The news item says Piranha Byte's titles are excluded and if you click the developer link, Gothic 3 is listed there too. So is this a mistake and purchasing Gothic 3 for 50% off an exploit of GOG's supposed carelessness or server troubles or is it perfectly okay and was meant to be this way? An official statement would be nice.

but when you go to the link of the sales topic http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue#all_genres/publisher/Piranha Bytes/
it points to gothic 1+2+3 though.

That's just a plain text search, even though the URL has 'publisher' in it. It's just returning all games that have Piranha Bytes in it.

Thanks! That would explain it. As lugum pointed out, it's still strange though that GOG chose to link to the all games with Piranha Bytes involvement when it really only concerns one game. If they'd have said "All games except for those published by Codemasters and Piranha Byte's Gothic" it would have been less confusing.

The community patch for G3 iirc is 1.7x, but the gog version is only patched to 1.6x, is there much of a difference?

Its not of any particular concern for me (I have the original release plus Gothic Universe), but it may be of interest to potential customers.

Yes, there is a huge difference. The community patch is a must imo.

Well 1.6 is also a community patch, but for some reason is supported by the publisher.

F1ach, the big difference is that either Alternative AI or Alternative balancing (or maybe both, not sure) where not introduced until 1.7x. Alternative AI makes the enemy combat AI a little bit like the previous Gothics, and alternative balancing basically resolves the issue where you were a superman by the end of the game. Both are optional, however.

MASSIVE MASSIVE difference...

Anyone with an AMD/ATi GPU needs to get the 1.7x patch as it solves a pretty annoying bug which renders shadows as 'nets' all over the graphics (if you don't want to upgrade, you need to disable shadows).

There's a metric tonne of other stuff tho including loads of changes to the skill systems, AI and a tonne of new graphic options which can melt even a top-end PC!!

The community patch even has it's own user manual - beautifully rendered to match the original and supplied as a PDF

It's a benchmark for community input to a game and works with all versions of Gothic (US/EU, Gog and even Steam)

Can the gog version be patched to 1.7x I wonder (again, not for me as I have the retail version). Would be handy for prospective purchasers.

Only you think VtM Bloodlines is "hard", sir.

You seem to consider Gothic, Elder Scrolls, VtM all "hard"... perhaps CRPGs aren't your thing, is all.
