Neverwinter Nights modules spotlight

A while back, together with the NWN Community, we've ran a contest for Neverwinter Nights GOG modules. The topic for all entrants was the same: "The DRM Monster and the Treasure of GOG". Well, now it's time to announce the winners AND present the modules which authors we decided to reward with some free GOG games.

The initial idea was to pick 4 best modules from both GOG and NWN communities and out of those pick 5 winners, but we decided that all 8 finalists deserve the prizes - each will receive 5 codes for any game at GOG.com!

The modules spotlight is our twelfth surprise in GOG.com's Holiday Celebrations. Don't know what we're talking about? For the first two weeks of December, we're going to reveal a little something for you once a day, until December 14 when we reveal the BIG surprise - that's only two days away from now!

So let's get a closer look at the modules we received for the contest. We'll keep the descriptions short as all of the modules are about the same and we don't want to spoil the fun :)

Module by Justin Francom - GOG.com community

A 20 minutes of gameplay module, petty simple but very enjoyable and funny. The module has many funny dialogs what made us decide to pick this module. As for the very first NWN module made by Justin, we were pleasantly surprised.

Dick Loraine - NWN community

Captain GOG's hidden treasure is waiting for you! But to prove yourself worthy you have travel through the islands where you defeat evil pirates, run from enraged ogres and bypass cunning traps. Word of advice, NEVER trust the DRM. Seriously, don't!

Kazeraven - GOG.com community

There's a GOG monk in the module - how could we not award that! ;) Your hero is in need of a magic wand, but it's not that easy to get a good and working one. The magic wands seller offers you models from such established brands like Stream or Encharted Arts Wands. Unfortunately the evil forces of DRM come to the stage. What happens next and what is the role of the GOG monk? Find out for yourself.

Olivier Leroux - NWN community

You are an intern in the malevolent corporation that cares only about profit. Seeing that their ways of doing "business" are wrong, you help the Clueless Customer Community in their fight against the unjust Champion - enforcer of the law!

Lord Uber Dowzen - GOG.com community

Here you play the mighty GOG.com - mighty because you cannot be destroyed even by marketing stunt! The evil DRM monster took Baldur's Gate from you and you need to get it back. During your quest through the dungeons you might encounter some familiar "faces".

Tarot Redhand - NWN community

You are trapped by the DRM monster and the only way to free yourself is to help him find a way to lift a curse of his... dog. During you adventure you will encounter some comical characters that will either help you or mislead you on your quest.

TVs_Frank - GOG.com community

Once again your quest is to fight the evil DRM monster. To reach this goal two adventurers enter the dungeons and have to fight their way to the main "bad guy" through hordes of minions called serial keys - does that resemble anything? Check what will happen when you defeat the DRM monster.

Tyndrel - NWN community

"This adventure draws upon a number of Arthurian legends, not all of them are compatible and some are even contradictory. Rhodri is an odd sort of character, mostly an honourable knight he also has had to live by his wits and has learned a few roguish skills along the way. He has much in common with that other medieval knightly rogue Robin Hood" says Tyndrel. That sounds interesting, check it out.

With the modules contest we had also one for creating the DRM monster model for the game. Unfortunately we have received only one model as it's pretty hard to make one. The model was sent by Hellfire and that's what he posted on the NWN forums: "My DRM monster is my version of Lars Ulrich. When i hear DRM monster he jsut comes to mnd. I cant help it". Thank you Hellfire for your effort!

All modules and the model of the DRM monster can be downloaded right here. Have fun, as we had a lot!

You should definitely check out Mattoco's module, too, as linked to above. I'm certain it would have been among the winners if it hadn't been disqualified for a small negligence that has now been corrected in the new release.

EDIT:
After taking a closer look at the screenshots above and spotting an intimidating intern who's armed to the teeth :D - I thought it was a good idea to remind everyone interested in playing these modules that they only work as intended if you choose the provided player characters. As Tarot Redhand fittingly wrote in his module description: "Others need not apply" - not even for underpaid internship. ;)

Congrats to all the 8 winners, as a lof of effort goes into making these modules. Have fun with your prizes. ;)

I am still somewhat shocked to be one of the winners. By way of a thank you for all the nice comments on this page here are a few links.

NwN has lasted so well because of all the user-generated content, most of it is available at the neverwinter vault where there are well in excess of 5700 modules written by members of the community.

Another thing that has helped to keep the scene vibrant is the Bioware forums. This is the current location and is where Bioware has the forums for most of thier games, so it takes a little scrolling to get to the nwn section. Here both players and builders of all levels can get help with any problems they may have.

Prior to the move, the NwN forums had a different home. While the forums on Biowares old site can no longer be written to, they are still available to be read here. For those wishing to take advantage of the toolset that comes with NwN there is a toolset intro and a short module building tutorial on this website as well.

Hope you find these links useful.

Edit. Having just had a closer look at the screenies, it's a pity that so many have the map visible as it could be a (mostly minor) spoiler.

Tallima, I played your module and it was fun. Some pretty cool ideas in there and impressively executed. Thank you very much for sharing it despite not being one of the winners!

Hey everyone thanks for the wonderful feedback. the prizes will be nice but its the warm receptions that make it feel worth while. I've always wanted to develop and write games what an awesome tool for that! I wonder if maybe some other developers would be interested in collaborating work on a more large scale project? Or if there is even a community interest here at GOG for a more serious undertaking?

Yeah, I've always been intrigued by the modding possibilities of NWN, but always felt that making mods for it would really reach a very wide audience (also the fact that whenever I start trying to make a mod for any game I get writers block and don't know what to make it about). Hopefully with the game on GOG the game will be opened up to a whole new audience.

Also, @ GOG, thanks for picking my module! Baldur's Gate 2 here I come...

I guess The Witcher 2 can't be chosen as one of the 5 games?
35
Congratulations to the mod authors and to GOG for this original and refreshing contest !

Follow the links in Tarot's post. There you can find an army of supportive NWN1 developers/players etc. And by all means bring some more GOG folks with you.

This contest is only the tip of the iceberg regarding what NWN1 can do. So come and explore. You will be made most welcome.

You really don't need me to answer that, do you. :p :D

Mattoco: Mind if I include this in the discussion thread I've started? Gives people a chance to try out more modules from this contest and gives the creators a place to garner feedback and module-building advice from the community.

Also, for those interested, you can directly download my submission here.
Yes. You can include it. Someone can put it in the vault if they want to, too. I'll keep the link good for at least the rest of the year.

I found Dick Loraine's "The Tale of the DRM Monster and the Treasure of GOG" to be quite pleasant but I found a game breaking bug. It appears you can only reach the 2nd Unknown Island if you have the 1st plot item in your inventory and the 3rd Unknown Island if you have *both* the 1st and 2nd plot item in your inventory. During my first play through I picked up the 1st plot item from the 1st island, dropped it off, then went to the 2nd island for the 2nd plot item. However even though I had completed the 1st & 2nd islands the rowboat would never carry me to the last island. Plus after dropping off the 1st plot item it looks like its impossible to get it back...

I had to reload a save.

So, not meaning to sound impatient or anything but when do we get our codes? :D
40
You too? Hehe. If tomorrows surprise is a great new release I'll be really hoping we get the codes first ;-) So how about rather than a small mini module we make a full sized GOG: The RPG?

Yeah, I'd be up for something along those lines. I've got some other projects I've got to see through at the moment, but after that I'm good. Are you on BSN?

Hmm, weird, BSN can't find you. If you want, try looking me up, I'm down as uberdowzen.

why do ppl make mods for such an old game?

kickbong: why do ppl make mods for such an old game?
Choose your answer:

1. To get five more old games for free.
2. Because it's fun (for ppl with imagination).
or 3. Out of compassion for the bored and lonely members of Trolls Anonymous, to make them less miserable and provide them with things to nag about so they can feel superior once in their lifetime, too.

In my case, because I want to, of course. Why shouldn't I. Up until a couple of months ago you could still buy this game over the counter in the UK. Check out all the custom content developed over the years. This games not old, it's pleasantly aged like a classic red wine. Compared to more modern offerings it is easy to design for and easier to build modules with.

You can still buy it here in the US at Best Buy. And there's still hundreds if not thousands of active servers (last I checked). I played this game at least weekly up until a year ago. It's a blast to play and to build with.

Congratulations to all the winners it's awesome that you put these together. And a big kudos goes out to GOG for setting up this contest, you guys are fostering a great sense of community for a great website!
