Whenever i play unreal, sometimes late at night, i feel an intense feeling of nostalgia for Unreal... which i oddly never played before this point. Maybe its the fact that such a great game has become.... Obscure now. I just cant play it for long without a dusty feeling in my chest and even becoming dizzy. Too sad that a game like that has died. The multiplayer is down to 15 people playing at once, tops. Let alone Ut99, where the game has been reduced to a bunch of sniper servers and wierd ones. Anyone else sad or nostalgic for these great games so intensely that they cannot play them?

Yes, in this current age of gaming mediocrity, I find myself playing more and more games made prior to 2005 (the last decent gaming year before this travesty).

Whenever I play UT99, it is somewhat depressing to see a game that once had thousands of regular players to now < 100.

Playing with bots is cool (UT bots are actually skillful in this respect), and anyway, if you want to hit up with some classic PvP FPS, try Quake Live. It is an excellent game IMHO (it's free anyway so you have nothing to lose).

Really? Frankly, I was much more surprised that this many people were still playing an over twelve-year old game online (which is probably closer to 200-300 if not more due to different time zones). Hell, I didn't even expect the master server for UT99 to exist anymore. That said, it's still a blast.

I picked up the game yesterday on a whim when I bought Alpha Centauri because I was looking for a bit of mindless shooting fun, and I had good memories of the game back when it was still new. I also found a few fun servers, which keep it varied: neither weird or sniper only.

Quake Live ain't bad, but Quake never really satisfied me as much as UT has.

Is there a GOG Unreal/UT99 server? If not, we should petition for one, it's a travesty that there isn't one.

Unreal just had unreal graphics for it's time. Hard to believe this game is from 1998. I can remember when i got this game with my new machine that could actually run this game. It was just amazing for it's time. Also the AI and the level design is very good. When you see the crap shooters today you can clearly see that they did not develop but huge steps back. Only the graphic is a bit better all the rest is just worse today.

Pick up games are held daily.

The first Unreal game is easily the most atmospheric FPS I've ever played. Entering Nyleve's Falls for the first time, the music, the sky, day and night effects, the story, the graphics, grand maps such as the Spire Village... All in all, awesome and compelling.

I also think it was one of the very first games I got to play with 3D accelerated graphics. Not a bad start. :)

ahhh UT my favourite fps ever I dont think nostalgia has ever got in the way because I just keep playing UT and I just can't find an FPS that is better though maybe thats because modern FPS could be described as First Person cutScene by some I'm sure.

It would be awesome if there was a GOG UT server afterall there is a 2004 one isn't there? and its not like UT servers are hard to setup anyway. Pity my ping would probably be awful to wherever it was located but that doesn't matter if other GOGians (is that the right word, GOGites maybe?) could play together the most awesome FPS ever.

This is the dark, bitter side of playing old games. You have to deal with the knowledge that your appreciation for a particular title isn't going to be shared by the vast majority of gamers, and that it's likely to only get worse. This is especially difficult when it's an obscure game, and one that you really love. AvP Classic 2000 is probably one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. But it has such a small community that finding multiplayer games is all but impossible. It really saddens me...literally...to know that it's only a matter of time before nobody is playing the game. The servers will shut down...the old hands will move on with their lives...and that will be that.

But, I do have good news, OP. Unreal isn't a dead game. I only played it for the first time a year or so ago, and it quickly became one of my favorites. I have a current SP game going right now, as a matter of fact. It has an active modding community that puts out regular fan-made patches (http://www.oldunreal.com/). And yes... the multiplayer is dead. But that's only because everyone is over at Unreal Tournament 1999, which is basically the exact same multiplayer, but better. In fact, UT99 is probably one of the more populated old multiplayer games I've ever found. So, no need to be sad! There's still plenty of love for Unreal.
