I've tried running the game in a few different compatibility modes, but I keep getting the below error:

Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices!
Possibly video card has no 3D support or Get latest video drivers from your manufacturer!
Or you must install DirectX 7.

Any ideas?
should probably mention I've got a GeForce GTX 570, not that it should make any difference for a 12 year old game!
