I cannot find Mallin anywhere for him to give me that "stolen" book...
Any suggestions, please?

If I good remember he is waiting near castle gate. I was surprised too. ;)

Just to add to this old post, I also had the same problem, but it turned out that he was stuck just off the screen in a glitch and I couldn't interact with him. Restarting the game fixed this. I'm glad to hear that some people didn't go through the same problem.
