I've sent a message to support: waiting for a reply.
I can't get this game to run on either of my two XP machines, both on SP3. The cursor changes to a 'loading' cursor when I double click the shortcut or the app itself, then changes back to a normal cursor.
Anyone else having a problem getting the game to run, or have any ideas on what could be the problem?

sperry1: i don't know if anyone has the same problem as i do. i downloaded the program and tried to install it but kept getting the same error message. "this file version my not be compatible with your windows version." Yet, the game description says that it is compatible with windows 7 and 64bit. I even tried to contact GOG through their email to technical support but even that didn't work. I'm very frustrated that i can't seem to reach them and i payed for a game that i can't even install. I tried all the solutions they had through the support page but nothing seems to work.

Can anyone suggest a solution or how to contact GOG?

thanks,
Sperry
What game are you referring to? There are 3 that this part of the forum applies to. Have you tried re-downloading the installer? It might just have got corrupted. If you're referring to Lords Of Magic, what size is the installer you've downloaded?

If you're able to use a checksum util, I can compare what you get against my working download to verify it works.

Apart from that, without more information all you can get is the general advice of making sure it's in a folder you have full permissions to. Try running as administrator, and make sure the account you're running is able to run applications as administrator (GOG installers require it).

My apologies. I was referring to lords of the realm: royal edition (1 &2). I thought the file might have been corrupted too so i downloaded again and receive the same message.

i'm not sure what the checksum utility is.

Done that. Tried running as administrator but same problem.

What's really frustrating about this is that i can't even email my problems to the GOG team. Their email at the technical support page doesn't work.

I don't know any other way of reaching them. Any advice would be appreciated.

thank you,

I can't help you with reaching GOG support, I am no more in the loop on that one than you. Perhaps a post in the general forums to highlight that their contact mechanism appears to be broken.

I have the installer for Lords of the Realm, If you want we could get you going with a checksum tool so that we can rule out the possibility of the installer being corrupted. I use Checksum For Windows as it's open source, and I can inspect the code I'm running. It can be downloaded here . If you run that against the installer and generate an MD5 checksum (the default option) then you should get a result of "5c0a32774c01c7571f9cb8fbddc7a489". If you don't get that then we have got different files, so you might have a corrupted installer. You will at least be able to confirm that you don't.

Could you go through exactly what happens. It seems strange that the installer won't even reach the first page. Is it literally as simple as you double click on the installer and it pops up an alert with that message? Have you tried any other GOG installers, if not download one of the free games and give that a shot (Lure of The Temptress is free and a small download).

The only other thing you could try is running the installer in a compatibility mode. Right click on the file, select properties. Then select the tab "Compatibility" and check the box to run it in Compatiblity mode.

I downloaded it and ran the software to compare. Unfortunately, i got different numbers than you do. The two different downloads i made also came up with different numbers. Is is possible that you may have a different version of this game that worked on your computer but not mine? I have a new computer that i just purchased last week and i did try to download it on my old computer using vista and the file open and i was able to play the game but it had no sound.

Yes. It's that simple. Here is the exact message i got " The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86(32 bit) or x64(64bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher."

That's the error message i kept getting when i tried to open the file to install the program.

Have you tried any other GOG installers, if not download one of the free games and give that a shot (Lure of The Temptress is free and a small download).

Yes. I downloaded and installed and run "master of magic" and "lure of the temptress" and they both run just fine.

Nope. I tried that. still didn't work. Thanks for trying to help, i guess the only thing i can do is deny the charge on my credit card since i can't reach them and i paid for a game that i can't even play.

sincerely,
sperry

I'm sorry you couldn't get it working, and have had to resort to such a tactic. There are a few options on the Contact us page for emailing GOG, it would be nice to try them all before bouncing the payment.

My mostly unfounded guess is that for some reason GOG have delivered you a 32 bit installer rather than the 64 bit, which will produce that message, and would explain why the installer has different hash values to mine. It's a shame that support haven't replied to you, they could fix this easily.

I don't suppose anyone can help me out here? It's been months now. When I try to launch Lords of Magic, nothing happens. The screen goes black for a second, then nothing. Startaffinity does nothing.

I'm afraid no-one can do much with that information. What OS are you running on? Are you up to date with your graphics drivers? Are there any entries posted in the event log after you start it (you can load the event log by start->run->eventvwr. Have you tried running the game in different compatibility modes, and as administrator? what graphics card are you using?
38
Oh, whoops. How silly of me. Here we go.

Windows XP SP3. My graphics drivers are up to date. There are no events posted in the event log. I'm running it as an administrator, and my graphics card is an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M My computer is a laptop, if that matters.
39
There is a suggestion in the readme that some people can get a black screen if they click through the animations too fast, but I doubt that applies here.

I can't remember what compatibility options XP offers, but it would be worth trying the ones it does to try running as win 95 / win 98.

You could also double check the permissions on the installed directory are all ok. Perhaps try installing to somewhere else other than program files.

I'm afraid these are all guesses though.
40
Tried all compatibility settings, checked permissions, and tried installing to a different directory. No effect.
41
Then I'm afraid you're going to have to go down the support route, though they are becoming famous for their lack of response. When you say StartAffinity does nothing, do you mean it is being used correctly, but still doesn't resolve the problem?

Hi all,

when I'm trying to start the game, I get the following error (translated):

"of magic special edition\dpstub.exe n:\lords of magic special edition\lomse. exe" couldn't be found. Make sure that path is correct and repeat.

Then a second error message: "Error respawning Lords of Magic."

I'm using Vista, the game installed fine. All compatibility modes have produced this error.
43
Don't know if this helps or not, but I set compatability mode to VISTA on both lomse.exe and dpstub.exe, and the game started for me when i doubleclicked lomse.exe. Nothing else that I tried worked.
I am running win 7 ultimate 64 bit version.

I had this same issue on 32bit Vista. I renamed the directory to just "lords of magic", and deleted the "special edition" part. Works fine now.
