In the first part of the "From Monochrome to Monarchy: King's Quest History" series of articles by David Craddock, we've presented the beginnings of On-Line Systems. With a slight delay, it's time for the second part - "Quest for a Crown".
After the enthusiastic reception of both Mystery House and Wizard and the Princess, On-Line Systems continued to grow. Ken and Roberta Williams' family blossomed almost in parallel. In 1979, shortly before On-Line's Hi-Res Adventure series made its debut, Ken and Roberta welcomed another son, Chris, into their lives. Sales of Mystery House and Wizard and the Princess were great enough to allow the family to move out of Los Angeles and into their dream home: a rustic log cabin outside the gold-mining town of Coarsegold, California.

It's always nice to have a new editorial, but here's a question... Does it mean no game today? Or that KQ's first three installments come soon?

I certainly hope so!
And then we want Quest for Glory 1-5. :-)

its not always easy to find old editorials - a page or section of just links to editorials would be nice. I posted a similar suggestion yesterday in the Farcry editorial discussion, but it got drowned out by the facebook discussion.

Yes, that would be a dream coming true for me. :-) But I fear it might be (a little bit) difficult to cope with all the different versions (but I hope we'll get the voiced DOS version) and all the "technical" (it probably wouldn't be easy to get rid of all the things that can prevent you from finishing this great game (unwinnable situations)) bugs of QfG 4...
But there's always hope.
(Sorry for OT)

This is a great write up, but it would be better to release the 1 - 3 before talking about the history. We want to play these wonderful creative works you tell us about in this write up. Where is todays release?

King's Quest 2 was considered a miss?Huh...Did not know that. KQ2 offers more of the same but on a more structured way, I mean if you discover the doors first that is...and you don't get screwed by the bridge....and you don't forget to pick up items in the different "lairs" such as the castle....and you didn't forget to make multiple different save files...
...but it felt so good to finish the game, it made me go back and play it again for the perfect score.

I seconded that. Although that fire elemental in QfG2 was seriously quite a pain. Took me a month to figure out all I needed to do, and that was only by accident. Anyone figure out of the money changer will change Pfennies (or whatever the small unit was) to Dinars? I mean, who wants to carry around 500 of those small coins? They seriously weight you down.
Did anyone else play my character? A Fighter hybridized into a Wizard/Thief (without the climbing skill). You just have to remember to pick up your shield after each battle, but more or less it worked.
By the way, I think that Hero's Quest was a way cooler name. Too bad the Hero Quest board game threw such a fit. Was that Hasbro?

This one took a really long time to come up. How many months ago was the first posted?
Anyway, very interesting. I played the original King's Quest, but only the VGA remake of KQII (which I thought was quite wonderful).
I've loved the series since playing the NES version of KQV when I was very young, and didn't have any walkthroughs available to help me through.

So does that mean you guys are going to sell King's Quest 1-3 soon? Also, I'd totally buy Mystery House if you guys sold it here for $2 or $3.

Oh great deal! Hope your right. I already own KQ 1 - 8, but would love to get the DRM free version from GOG.

I think Mystery House was released into the public domain by Sierra at some point.

Uh... I'm pretty sure the original releases are DRM-free. :-)
