Is there a way to tell a characters alignment early on? Can neutral characters use both the living and chaos swords?

I want to use the same 3 characters from Ishar 1-3, I was thinking of having Karorn the Paladin as one fighter and either Gaarth or 'Unknown' the dark knight as the other. I'm guessing Karorn can use the living swords and Unknown the chaos sword. But I would like to use Gaarth so that Molgo the dwarf wizard doesn't leave the party (I prefer a wizard with a decent amount of hitpoints).
