Dominus: I remember this game had a wonderful soundtrack that also was available on CD. Why is it not included? =( An how about Betrayal at Krondor? Will it be available to download too?
Betrayal at Krondor was released as freeware by Sierra. So you can download it off the net, freely and legally. The stock package doesn't run on Vista though. I think with some DOSBOX work it would run just fine. That said, if GOG released it, it might be worth getting here just for the ease of installation.
Unfortunately, while Betrayal was released by Sierra, as part of a promotion, only Sierra were allowed to distribute it. The game isn't actually freeware. Not that I suppose anyone at Vivendi (who own Activision Blizzard, who own Activision, who own Sierra, who own the license to Betrayal at Krondor) will care too much. But they have stated that no one but Sierra were allowed to distribute BaK, and Sierra isn't distributing it any more. I still have a the SierraOriginals re-release, which runs wonderfully on DosBox.
Betrayal at Krondor is one of the best games ever made if not the best. Return to Krondor never comes close. Granted, the later is a decent game in its own right, and I still have the original CDs, but it doesn't measure up to the original. My problem with RtK, is that it feels like a good game was being made, and then the studio ran out of money. You can almost pinpoint the exact moment it happens. After that, they just threw together whatever they had and released it. Now, as far as BaK goes, it would be absolutely spectacular if GOG would publish it as a free download. Although seeing what the scumbags at Activision did to The Silver Lining this week, I wouldn't be surprised if they do not allow it.

At least according to Wikipedia, Betrayal at Krondor is not freeware anymore. Sierra doesn't exist anymore and thus don't have the rights to make any of their games freely available. Vivendi has apparently stated that they don't consider BaK to be freeware.
Okay, I'm interested in this game, but in looking at the screenshots and trailer, I'm a little confused by one thing: the game is obviously early 3D, but I can't tell if it is full 3D or if it is 3D characters interacting with a pre-rendered, fixed environment. If its full 3D, wow, that's impressive considering the game's age, but if it is like the old Resident Evil games... lets just say I'd rather avoid the frustration of that again.
I believe it used prerendered backgrounds. I also remember thinking it looked really good at the time it came out. While I agree with others that Return to Krondor is not as good as Betrayal at Krondor, it was still a good game in its own right. It is a smaller game than BaK, but partly that is due to the move to 3D. This is a solid addition: a good game in an interesting setting. And perhaps a harbinger for Betrayal. We can hope anyway.
horatiotupper: Betrayal at Krondor and Antara are great.
You are the only person I've ever seen praising B@Antara. It was complete and utter garbage, especially compared to the wonderful B@Krondor. Even Return to Krondor, while nothing special, is significantly, and I mean significantly better.

I thoroughly enjoyed Betrayal at Krondor (I still own the original CD ROM and its fancy manual) and Return to Krondor (a rich visual 3D update with competent voice acting), but I also happened to like Sierra's Betrayal At Antara, too, however derivative (to the point of near plagiarism) it was of the game to which Sierra had lost its rights a few years prior. Antara's plot was a bit more dumbed down, and the voice acting was a bit more corny and lighthearted, but I still remained interested in the game enough to see it through to completion, and would buy it again if GOG offered it. It was essentially the same as Betrayal at Krondor but with SVGA graphics and a story that wasn't quite as capably constructed as those by Raymond Feist.
Betrayal at Krondor should be on GOG too! It's a really really good game. To this day I still have flashbacks from hours upon hours of just figuring out the Moredhel riddles as a youngster. It would also be awesome if a big gaming company took on the opportunity of bringing the world of Midkemia back to life. Bethesda maybe? ;-D
