Nope, unfortunately. It was not developed with that in mind, and implementing it at a current state would be very difficult (from what I've gathered), but the source code is there, so if you're a nerd-raging programmer you could give it a try.
But true, it's very "hardcore". Being persistent is probably the only way to go, apart from strategy guides and such.

Not had any issues with running Ishar 1 & 2 with a geforce 9800 gtx. Hope that helps.
Forgot about the money to save the game now i rember how frustrating Ishar 1 was to begin with but if you keep at it the game is well worth it.
Wish i never got rid of the copy of ST Format that had the solutions lol.

BG&E is not GOG's fault. The port is an abysmal mess. Some people can get it to work, but most can't. And you can't really blame them for putting BG&E up here (even if it is a mess) as it is certainly a GREAT old game.

I agree it was probably a bad port to begin with, but Gog is the one who guarantees it works with Vista, so I don't see why I can't blame them.
EDIT: That said, I got the game from a free game code I won from GOG, so I've no right to complain I suppose :)

I got the retail version of it, and apart from a certain area where there were some missing textures on the floor, I had no problems with it. It's actually one of the better ports I'd say. The biggest problem is where they grab the camera control from you. They should start doing away with that shit, or else I'm going to have to hurt someone.

To the best of my knowledge, Silmarils went bankrupt in 2003. This does raise the interesting question of where the rights to the games went after the bankruptcy, and who GOG had to get the rights off to distribute their games.
