Like fangbite wrote in my other thread, I think it is good, if we could make a list, what game from GOG works good/ not so good with Ubuntu/Linux and Wine.
I will edit this post with alle tested games. :)
I take the start:
Games with Wine tested:
Descent 3
avatar
bagnaj97: it works perfectly if you take note of the following:
1. You must use the opengl renderer. After some fiddling I got direct3d working but it was slow.
2. I found oss sound to be better than alsa, but YMMV (change using winecfg)
3. Compiz must be disabled before playing. This is very important as direct3d wouldn't display anything except the hud and opengl had severe scaling issues (only top right of display shown over the whole screen). You can run the command "metacity --replace" to temporarily disable compiz, log out and in again to get compiz back.
This actually worked better for me than under vista x64 as under vista I couldn't get mouse control working.

Fallout
No Problems with the installation, starting the game also worked without any problems.
Fallout 2
No Problems with the installation, starting the game also worked without any problems.
Freespace
avatar
jsims2359: Freespace 1 runs on Ubuntu 8.04 with wine 1.1.4, but the sound cuts out and exiting the game will force you to kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Be advised.
UPDATE: The mouse is usable as a flight control, but just barely. There seems to be some disparity between the resolution of the game window and the resolution the mouse thinks is in effect. The effect is also noticeable in the hanger if you move your mouse pointer to the far right. You start to see some delay on both axises.

Giants: CItizen Kabuto
avatar
jmgreen7: Giants installed and started fine but the performance really tanked whenever the camera was facing a building/structure (like 5-10 FPS). Then I installed the GiantsHooks patch and the performance is now great. I haven't tested multiplayer.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
avatar
jsims2359: is running as it should on Ubuntu 8.04 with wine 1.1.4.
NOTE: You must emulate a virtual desktop in order for Direct X to be detected correctly which allows you launch the game. Also, the sensitivity of the x axis while using mouse control (with the helicopters) seems to fluctuate randomly from near perfect control to frustratingly unresponsive. Mouse works fine everywhere else.

Kingpin

danebramage: installs and runs fine (there's no cursor on the main menu screen, but since it can be navigated with the arrow keys, that's no big deal).

M.A.X.
avatar
danebramage: installs and runs fine (since it runs in DOSBox, it works best in a window where the top of the screen isn't cut off by the DOSBox window's title bar--hit Alt-Enter to go into windowed mode).

M.A.X. 2
avatar
danebramage: installs fine but wouldn't run for me the one time I tried. No big loss, as M.A.X. 2 sux and it comes bundled free with the original M.A.X.

MDK 1

Dash: works great under WINE, all except for the video. It's not bad though. It stretched the video out to the point where some of the game was off screen in the Y directions. A change of options to the display of games in a window fixed it.

Original War
avatar
FALK: Original War is somewhat playable, but with bad graphics in hud, wouldn't recommend it. Unable to run in VirtualBox because it cant detect the graphics card memory correctly. Maybe it works in vmware.

Perimeter
avatar
fangbite: Perimeter installed and ran fine. The only thing which might be considered a glitch is that the game just took over a piece of my desktop in the top left corner, carving out a number of pixels according to its resolution.
avatar
FALK: Runs great in wine 1.1.4 except the cursor is invisible, can be fixed by building and using wine-hacks: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git . I hope the patch enters mainline soon, but the bug has been known for almost a year.

Sacrifice
avatar
jmgreen7: Sacrifice installed and ran without a hitch and runs great. I haven't tested multiplayer.

chris20636: In Fedora 8, the game would play fine for a 15-30 minutes and then the sound would go to a loud hiss. Some google searches seems to pinpoint the problem to the new X windows sound server in Fedora 8 and up called pulseaudio. I removed the pulseaudio packages from my system using yum. I rebooted and after playing with the volume control some, I got sound back which should be pure ALSA system. So far, that seems to have fixed the sound problem.
I didn't notice the mouse issue some have had under XP. However, I did notice it under Linux. The fix was the same though. Just don't use the mouse and hit ESC to get past the movie to the main menu. Then using the mouse at the menu and in the game works fine.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone runs out-of-the-box in Wine-1.3.19. Shadows slow down the game considerably.

D&D: Dragonshard also works flawlessly in recent Wine.

Panzer Elite: SE shows massive texture corruption in hardware accelerated D3D mode. This applies only to the 1.2 version of the game. If you install the unofficial Panzer Elite Three mods, the texture corruption is gone and the game is pretty playable.

uriel1998: Wait, what? Someone's managed to get BGI multiplayer working under WINE and/or GemRB? (GemRB won't let me even touch it, and WINE seems to error out - but my son's router is flaky enough that it *could* be the router if others have succeeded.)
I should have said something a few months back, but I was able to get BG 1 & 2 working under wine linux in Baldur's Gate Trilogy. And after I fixed some firewall issues, I was able to get it working multiplayer. it took a long time (some to do with one set of scratched cds) and ended up being a 5Gb install. This was using the real CDs (sword coast as well as Throne of Bhaal). I think I had to copy the files off one of the CDs and mount it as a directory (BG2_ToB/CD5) as part of the process, then mapped it as drive D. Stuck it on a virtual desktop (800x600). Installed dplayx, dpnet, dpnhpast, and dpwsockx as native for multiplayer.

I only played each game for a few minutes after all that work, but it all seemed good.

For what it's worth

Finally, Ground Control II starts and runs perfectly in Wine-1.3.23.
Just make sure the corefonts package is installed.
Even multiplayer seems to work (although no players were present when testing).

ArmA works well on Wine. So far I have tested it on my Mint 8 with Nvidia 173 driver (for a Geforce fx 5200 graphics card) on Wine 1.1.31, 1.2.2 and 1.3.something and it runs fine on all of them. The only problem is it doesn't seem to like trees and bushes (slowing down when around them). I don't know if this is to do with my graphics card, driver, Wine or other.

I'll try to test it on my other hard drive (with Arch installed which should have more up-to-date drivers etc.) when I have time. I'll keep you posted.

lackoo1111: Anyone tried to install GOG files with Crossover ? It gaves me access violation error right after the integrity checking of the setup file.
I think I have the very same problem since this summer!
Details in PM

Moto Racer (1) works Ok under Crossover game, and I suspect under Wine in general.
* It requires a 16 bpp (65536 colors) display, which is the most cumbersome part, see Wine FAQ for available solutions (I used the "xinit -- :1 -ac -depth 16" solution to start a second X server and keep 3D acceleration)
* It wants a cdrom device, in Wine configuration I had to change the type of the drive mapped to /media/cdrom0 from "automatic" to "cdrom", or it'd complain that the "CD audio is already locked" or something like that before starting a race
* At the beginning, the screen used to enter player's name flickers heavyly (double buffering issue?), but is still readable
* Some triangle glitches at end of race
But race itself runs great!

Hi all,
I created two PlayOnLinux scripts to install Outcast and Zenger's hires patch v3 on Linux:

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-8326.html

Lots of tweaks and enhancements come from reading this very forum, I just tried to package the whole thing to make everything very easy to setup (which means many hours testing installation again and again ;) )

Remark that I haven't asked for a GPG signature yet, so the scripts will be considered "untrusted" .

Any feedback welcome, specially on PlayOnLinux forums: they seem to prefer people working on recent games, but I think that more scripts for good old games would really rock :)

Tex Murphy: Overseer starts and runs fine with the latest Wine development versions. The commit that fixed the startup problem in Overseer is just a few days old, so either compile the daily git version or wait until 1.3.35 released.

What's the problem with it? What Wine version are you using?

I wrote a PlayOnLinux script for it, and it worked almost out-of-the-box...

Thank you, this was perfect for me. I was originally having issues where the game would only run either in full screen or in an emulated desktop, and usually crashing after being open about twenty seconds, but that remedied my issue.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition works reasonably well with recent Wine versions.

There are anyway the following (minor) problems:
* Health/Toxicity bars don't work (always empty)
* Endurance bar doesn't work as supposed (it can be either completely full or completely empty)
* No health indicators under NPCs
* Infrequent crashes (very rare with latest wine versions)

Also, performance could be worse than under Windows; I tried it only under Linux, but on my system (Core i5 520m, GeForce GT 330m, 4 GB RAM, 1600x900 resolution, everything maxed except no AA, no AF) I experienced some slowdowns in large populated areas.

Played through the whole game, still playing additional modules of enhanced edition.
