According to the Arx Fatalis FAQ this is a known problem with some ATI cards and can be easily fixed by editing cfg_default.ini and setting softfog=1. In theory this will still work.

Thanks. That worked. On Vista the cfg.ini is in under AppData/Local/VirtualStore instead of the root, but other than that, the change fixes the problem. :-)

Found an ObsCure demo. I can vouch for it working on Vista. Just played it, and while being rather short it's actually quite fun. Fraid you'll have to sign up for free gamespot membership if you want it tho :(
