I think some buyers should even SUE gog for selling this crap. They know about the issue and do nothing to fix it since release.

Has anyone written a letter directly to GoG? I wonder what their statement is.

I did, and their reply was that that they don't have the rights to the DOS version of the game. I reckon they were conned into buying the rights to the hobbled XP version. Whoever owns those rights should do the decent thing and hand them over to GOG. Only then will we see what Earth 2140 should be like.

However, even if GOG did buy the rights surely they are not legally bound to have to sell the game? Could they not choose to remove it from the catalogue to prevent consumers buying this known broken game? Which of course would also prevent Zuxxez from making any money from GOG for sale of the game.

Yes I agree with you korell. It should be withdrawn from sale until it is fixed and everyone who has already purchased this XP version (including myself) should be given the replacement fully functional DOS version for free. However, does Zuxxez actually own the rights to the DOS version? I also own the Amiga/Mac version of the game and I think (it's been a while since I last looked at it) there was no mention of Zuxxez on the case, only Topware.

They might be bound to sell it, but I believe the fact the game is broken makes the contract voidable.

Well this really sucks. I was planning on buying this title to quench my thirst for old school 2D, C&C style, strategy games. It's a good thing I read the forums first.

I agree that the game should be taken down, or at least patched. Is there no unofficial patch out there that fixes the AI problems? They could implement that in the download, or at least put it as a hotlink on the forums.

I am not aware of any such patch and I have looked hoping that there might be one some place. The only way at present to fix this problem is for GOG to get the DOS version of the game or for someone who has the ability to mod the game in some way to reinstate its AI routines. GOG have been strangely silent over the issues related to this game.

Really folks, keep on posting your thoughts in this thread as it all helps to keep this problem in the spotlight.

I own the CD version (DOS) which has working AI, but the problem is that I cannot get it to run under Win XP. Otherwise I'd try to tinker with the game files to maybe solve the problem, if it is solvable that way.

Have you tried running your DOS version under DOSBox? You'll may need to install it with DOSBox too.

Now, if I buy this game, which is presumably issued BEFORE 2150, will I be able to break out the old Windows 98 pc I have and get this game to run???

GOG's installers won't work on Win98, though you can use something like InnoUnp to extract their installer, or you could install it on an XP or later machine and copy the files over (though you'll then need to find the registry entries to set up).

However, as the above posts explain, the version of Earth 2140 on GOG is the Windows version which has the broken AI, so this may well impact on your enjoyment of the game. If only they had the DOS version which has working AI.

You could try D-Fend Reloaded, it is an easy to use front end for Dos Box. Here is a link http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/Download.html

Also you might need to try VDM Sound card emulator. Here is a link to that too http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

Good luck, hope you get it working ;)
