How do you earn skill points in the Descent 1 game?

After completing each stage (blowing up the reactor), it shows you how many points you accumulated for that stage, i.e. 1000 for hostages, 500 for shields, etc. There's a category for "Skill". I've never accumulated "Skill" points. Does anyone know how to accumulate "skill" points?

I did that and still didn't get any skill points. You know I think you get these points if you don't get hit at all, or if you play at the insane level, i.e. something outrageous. Because I've rescued all hostages in Level 1 without dying and blown up the reactor and flew out of the mine safely and haven't gotten any skill points.

OK here's what seems to be the definitive answer.
First of all, presume the difficulty levels start at 0,
0=Trainee, 1=Rookie, 2=Hotshot, 3=Ace, 4=Insane
1) No cheats (of course)
2) Difficulty level "Ace" or greater
3) level points * (difficulty level - 1) / 2
4) subtract the modulus of the above into 100 (So, something like 34567 would get you 34500)
This is from the source code, available on the web. I didn't do extensive searching through the code, so they may have slipped something in there that resets them to zero but I seriously doubt it.

You can get skill points on hotshot.
I've been getting them consistently; I'm pretty sure I've found all secrets and killed all enemies, a well as rescuing all hostages.

If that's true then the difficulty level starts at 1, and not 0. Otherwise it would never get into the condition that calculates this. Has nothing to do with secrets, hostages or all robots, it looks to be completely score related.

Rescue the hostages and blow the reactor and escape without dying will get you skill points
If you rescue the hostages and die, the hostages die with you... carefull stratigy to remove all bot threats including clearing out the reactor room of potential threats befor rescuing the hostages and blowing the reactor for you final escape
